Can I study at another university?

More Information
Can I interrupt my studies?

Cross-Institutional Study allows a student enrolled in a degree program at one institution to study courses at another institution for credit towards their original program.

Students may elect to undertake cross-institutional study for a number of reasons, for example, needing to take a course via distance education, wanting to study a course that is not offered at their home university, or needing to study a course in another state.

Cross-Institutional Information for Non-UQ Students

Cross-Institutional studies at UQ are available to students who are currently enrolled in a degree program at another Australian University and wish to complete studies at The University of Queensland for credit towards that degree.

Cross-Institutional Information for UQ Students

Faculty of Arts students can apply to study as a "visiting student" at another University - this is called cross-institutional study. Approved courses completed at other Universities can be credited to the UQ degree.

Students enrolled in programs offered through the Faculty of Arts who want to complete studies at another University for credit towards their UQ degree must obtain the Faculty's approval before enrolling elsewhere. Courses completed on a cross-institutional basis will not be included in calculating their GPA at The University of Queensland.

To apply for cross-institutional study you should:

  1. Have completed at least 16 units in your current program at The University of Queensland prior to undertaking cross-institutional study.
  2. Select the institution you wish to undertake studies at by searching various web sites (eg you may wish to select a university who offer external studies).
  3. Obtain the application form to enrol as a "cross institutional student" from the university where you wish to complete your studies.
  4. Obtain course outlines for the courses you wish to study - you can usually print these directly from the web.
  5. Submit your completed cross-institutional application form along with your course descriptions to the Faculty of Arts office.

Requests will be processed within 2-4 weeks of submission (when all the information requested above is provided).

If the studies are approved, a letter will be sent advising that upon submitting evidence of successful completion of the course, credit will be granted.

Please note:

  • Students excluded from the University of Queensland will not be granted approval to undertake cross-institutional study.
  • Students wanting to take subsequent cross-institutional studies will be required to submit a statement of results from their current semester before they will be approved to undertake further courses on a cross-institutional basis.

To claim credit for completed cross institutional study

Once the course has been completed you must do the following:

  1. Submit a completed credit application form to the Faculty of Arts Office.
  2. Attach an original academic transcript from the other institution

Credit requests will normally be processed within a 2-4 week period.

Important Note

The onus is on you to submit your official academic transcript to the Faculty office for credit to be processed. Your host university does not provide this documentation direct to the Faculty of Arts.

Whilst every effort is made to assist students, the Faculty of Arts assumes no responsibility for the late receipt of results from other institutions which may lead to students missing graduation deadlines.

Studying Italian at Griffith University

The Faculty of Arts allows BA students to complete a major in Italian through Griffith University on a cross-institutional basis. The Italian courses are viewed as non-BA List courses, so it is not possible for students who have claimed credit for a previously completed degree to complete a major in Italian without undertaking additional units.Students intending to complete the major in Italian may commence cross-institutional studies for this major in their first year of study.
