 Student Information

Promoting intercultural communication and understanding, the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies is dedicated to excellence in the teaching and research of major world languages and the cultures in which they are spoken, in applied linguistics and in translating and interpreting.

Nine languages are available to UQ students:

Chinese French German Indonesian Italian Japanese Korean Russian Spanish

All these languages can be studied at beginners through to advanced level. Programs in these languages are available to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Applied Linguistics is a postgraduate program, but there are some undergraduate courses in Applied Linguistics.

Formal qualifications in Translation and Interpreting (Chinese or Japanese) are available at postgraduate level only, although most of our undergraduate language programs offer introductory courses in translation or interpreting.

Although most of our students are enrolled in a degree program, the school also welcomes other students:



Undergraduate Students
An extensive number of undergraduate courses in language and studies courses are offered.

Bachelor of Arts (Honours)
For students who would like to develop and consolidate the knowledge and skills acquired during undergraduate study.

Postgraduate Coursework Programs
Postgraduate coursework programs enable students to upgrade their skills, and enhance their employment prospects and professional development.

Research Higher Degree Progams
are available at Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) levels.

Exchange Programs
are available to many countries.

Placement interviews
Some students who are not beginners in a language may need a placement interview.

Griffith cross-institutional students
Griffith students can cross-enrol at UQ to study Korean, French, German, Russian and Indonesian.

Cross-institutional Students
For students currently enrolled in French, German, Indonesian and Japanese at QUT.

Student Resources and Facilities
The School provides many state of the art resources for students.

Student Forms and Policies
Including assignment coversheet, essay style guide, extension request form and other useful forms.

Many awards and prizes are open to students within the School.
