Professor Peter Holbrook specialises in English Renaissance and Shakespearean literature. He has published on the representation of social class in Tudor-Stuart literature, on the politics of the English seventeenth-century court masque, and on nineteenth-century uses of Shakespeare (for example by Nietzsche).

Professor Holbrook is also a chief investigator for The Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions. This is Australia's largest humanities research grant and has led to a number of new postdoctoral research fellowships and PhD “top-up” scholarships at UQ. More than $24 million in ARC funding will flow to the centre over seven years, and collaborating institutions and industry partners will contribute more than $6 million. Professor Holbrook will direct a Centre node at UQ.
