Study at the University of Queensland without being enrolled in a degree!
Through the Faculty of Arts Community Access Program (CAP) you have the opportunity to enrol in individual courses without undertaking a whole degree and without the need to apply through QTAC.
CAP gives you the opportunity to draw on the considerable resources of The University of Queensland while experiencing the richness of university life. Students enrolled in the CAP attend the same classes as degree students. You will be taught by University of Queensland staff, many of whom are world leaders in their fields.
CAP provides an excellent opportunity if you have:
- always had an interest in learning something new;
- wanted to study a particular area of interest but do not wish to undertake a formal degree;
- previously completed tertiary study and want to enhance your academic record;
- wanted to explore a potential area of study before making a commitment to more intensive study; or
- seeked an alternative pathway to tertiary study.
CAP gives you the option of studying as an "assessed student" or a "non-assessed" student. Whichever option you choose, you will attend the same classes as degree students and will be taught by University of Queensland staff, many of whom are world leaders in their fields.
Assessed or Non-Assessed Study
You may choose to study as an “assessed” or “non-assessed” student. “Assessed” students undertake the same course workload and assessment as students enrolled in a degree program and are eligible to receive a formal academic record of their study. “Non-assessed” students attend lectures and tutorials, and follow the course reading programs for the purpose of gaining knowledge without having to undertake assessment or examinations. A Certificate of Attendance is awarded to “non-assessed” students at the end of each semester.
Improve Your Rank/OP
Courses undertaken by “assessed” students may be used by QTAC for the calculation of a tertiary entrance rank. If you did not complete the final year of secondary school, or have a non-competitive OP or tertiary entrance rank, you may improve your chances of gaining a tertiary place by achieving good results in four or more courses as an “assessed” student.
“Non-assessed” students may also improve their tertiary entrance rank by using the knowledge and experience gained through their university experience to enhance their QTAC application.

Who Can Apply for CAP
If you are applying for introductory level courses (beginning with a “1” eg HIST1601) as “assessed” studies, or for introductory or advanced level courses as a “non-assessed” student, your application will normally be approved as a matter of course. In most cases entry to later year level “assessed” study relies on previous tertiary study in the area.
“Assessed” students applying to study a language are required to attend a placement test to determine in which course they should enrol, they should contact the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies to arrange a time, telephone (07) 3365 2270 or email slccs@uq.edu.au.
